Poland energy sector focuses on cogeneration and green hydrogen projects

The Polish Association of Heat and Power Engineering (PTEC) has released a report emphasizing the critical role of cogeneration and Power-to-Heat technologies in transforming Poland's heating sector and ensuring the stability of the National Power System. In 2024, cogeneration units accounted for approximately 64% of systemic heat in Poland, producing about 29.2 TWh of electricity and 57.3 TWh of net heat. PTEC calls for a stable regulatory environment to support the modernization of these units and define efficient heating systems for the post-2035 period.

In Sanok, a decarbonization project valued at over 600 million PLN, titled ‘Hydrogen Sanok’, is being developed by Hydro Sanok in partnership with Hynfra. The project aims to utilize solar energy to produce green heat for the city, with green hydrogen as a byproduct for industrial or transport use. Proponents suggest this model will protect the municipality from the price volatility of traditional fossil fuels, though local council members have raised concerns regarding the proportionality of construction costs relative to the expected benefits.
