Poland enforces up to 5,000 zł fine for illegal mushroom picking

Polish law protects 322 mushroom species, with 232 under strict protection and 90 under partial protection. Picking a protected fungus can result in a fine of up to 5,000 zł, while forest‑guard or police penalties for other infractions may reach 500 zł. Harvesting is also banned in national parks, nature reserves and areas temporarily closed due to fire risk or other hazards, and on private forests marked with no‑entry signs.

A recent video posted by a forager in the Wielkopolska region showed dozens of abundant chanterelles and other prized mushrooms, quickly gaining nearly 600,000 views on Facebook. The clip sparked lively discussion about where and when it is lawful to gather mushrooms, reminding the public to verify species and respect the protection zones before filling their baskets.
