Poland enters top 20 global economies as migration trends reverse

Poland has emerged as one of the world's 20 largest economies, with its GDP exceeding one trillion dollars. This economic ascent marks a significant shift from being a primary source of cheap labor for Western Europe to a regional hub for technology and high-value sectors.

Data indicates a reversal in migration patterns. Since 2021, the number of Poles leaving the United Kingdom has been approximately twice the number of those arriving. Additionally, 2024 marked the first time more foreigners moved from Germany to Poland than vice versa.

While the country's GDP per capita has reached 81% of the EU average—up from 40% in the mid-1990s—the rapid growth brings challenges. Rising costs of living, particularly for housing and services in major cities like Warsaw, are impacting wage gains. The previous economic model based on low labor costs is reaching its limits, shifting the focus toward productivity, technology, and energy efficiency.
