Poland establishes AI oversight Commission to handle complaints

Poland has activated new regulatory powers allowing citizens and entities to file complaints against artificial intelligence systems. The Commission for the Development and Security of Artificial Intelligence (KRiBSI) is now authorized to investigate reports, conduct inspections, and issue decisions regarding AI systems that may violate national or European Union regulations.

Under the new framework, the Commission can impose significant administrative fines for serious violations of the AI Act, reaching up to 35 million euros or 7 percent of a company’s total global annual turnover. The regulatory body has the authority to order operators to cease using specific systems or withdraw them from the market if they pose direct risks to life, health, safety, or fundamental rights.

Led by Pamela Krzypkowska, the Commission intends to prioritize oversight of prohibited systems, including those used for emotion recognition in the workplace and those generating non-consensual intimate imagery. Individuals and companies may also request formal interpretations of regulations for a fee, with the Commission aiming to provide opinions within 30 days.
