Poland expects record number of Matura graduates in 2027

Poland is preparing for a historic surge in high school graduates. According to projections from the Central Examination Commission (CKE), approximately 386,000 students are expected to take the Matura exam in May 2027. This represents a record-breaking peak for the 21st century, marking an increase of over 140,000 candidates compared to three years prior.

The sharp rise in numbers is attributed to a combination of demographic shifts and previous educational reforms, including changes to compulsory school age and the phasing out of middle schools (gimnazja). Data indicates that the number of students in the penultimate years of high schools and technical schools has increased by 21 percent compared to the previous year.

Preparation for the 2027 exams involves mandatory written tests in Polish, mathematics, and a modern foreign language, alongside oral exams in Polish and the chosen foreign language. Students must also complete at least one additional subject at an extended level. Experts suggest that students should begin their preparation in September by diagnosing knowledge gaps and selecting extended subjects based on university recruitment requirements rather than personal preference.
