Poland faces demographic shifts and economic divergence

Poland is experiencing significant demographic changes characterized by a declining population and an aging society. In the first half of 2026, the country lost approximately 90,000 residents, averaging a loss of nearly 500 people per day. This decline is primarily driven by a negative natural increase, with deaths outnumbering births by 95,200 during that period. Factors contributing to low fertility rates include housing constraints, with 43% of apartment dwellers citing space as a barrier to having children, and a fertility rate that fell to 1.068 in 2025.

Despite these population challenges, there are signs of increasing longevity, with the number of centenarians expected to reach 70,000 by 2060. Economically, Poland is seeing a shift in migration patterns; while historically Poles moved to Germany for better opportunities, an increasing number of Germans are moving to Poland, drawn by a growing economy, lower taxes, and reduced bureaucracy. While the national unemployment rate remains relatively stable at 5.8%, significant regional disparities exist, with unemployment rates ranging from 1.4% in parts of Wielkopolska to 22.2% in certain districts of the Mazowieckie region.
