Poland faces dispute over Maciej Berek's Constitutional Tribunal appointment
A political dispute has emerged in Poland following the Sejm's election of Maciej Berek, a former government policy implementation minister, to the Constitutional Tribunal. The appointment has faced significant scrutiny from the Presidency.
Zbigniew Bogucki, head of the President's Chancellery, stated there are “gigantic doubts” regarding whether Berek meets the required 10-year legal counsel seniority. The Presidency has requested clarification from the Sejm regarding the formal procedure used for the candidacy. In response, the Sejm's Chancellery maintains that the election is valid and expects the immediate administration of the oath by President Karol Nawrocki.
Former Prime Minister Leszek Miller warned Donald Tusk against using force to secure the tribunal building, suggesting such actions could undermine the democratic coalition's arguments against political interference in state institutions. Meanwhile, MEP Borys Budka defended Berek as a skilled lawyer and criticized the opposition and the Presidency, characterizing the political climate as aggressive.
