Poland hit by severe storms, heat and power cuts on Aug 1 2026
On 1 August 2026 the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) issued a series of weather alerts covering almost the entire country. First‑degree storm warnings were posted for the north‑west and coastal regions, second‑degree warnings for central and eastern voivodeships, and third‑degree heat warnings for Lublin, Świętokrzyskie, parts of Mazowieckie, Podkarpackie and Małopolska. Forecasts called for thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 110 km/h, hail up to 6 cm in diameter and heavy rain of 20‑50 mm (locally up to 100 mm). Temperatures were expected to reach 37‑38 °C in the south‑east.
The alerts triggered a nationwide SMS warning from the Government Security Centre, warning of storms, strong winds, heavy rain, hail and possible electricity interruptions. Energa announced planned power cuts affecting hundreds of customers in the Mazowieckie region starting the following Monday. Fire services recorded roughly 100 storm‑related interventions in Lower Silesia, mainly clearing fallen trees and dealing with local flooding. The severe weather forced the evacuation of the Męskie Granie concert in Wrocław.
U.S. forecasters also highlighted a sharp north‑south temperature contrast for August, noting cooler, rainy conditions in the north and extreme heat in the south.
