Poland faces institutional crisis over Constitutional Tribunal dispute

Poland is experiencing a significant institutional crisis centered on the Constitutional Tribunal. The conflict intensified following a decision by Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, the most senior judge, to assume leadership of the Tribunal and order a suspension of duties for President Bogdan Święczkowski and Vice-President Bartłomiej Sochański.

This development has escalated tensions between President Karol Nawrocki and Prime Minister Donald Tusk. President Nawrocki, who returned to Warsaw from Senegal following the developments, has conditioned meetings with the Prime Minister on the removal of police cordons from the Tribunal and the reinstatement of judges whom the President considers to be legally serving in their roles. Prime Minister Tusk has rejected these conditions.

French newspaper Le Figaro described the situation as a political conflict evolving into an institutional crisis, noting that the dispute has both political and constitutional dimensions. Protests have increased outside the Tribunal's headquarters as the nation faces a standoff regarding the boundaries of power and the legal legitimacy of judicial functions.
