Poland faces teacher shortages and workforce readiness gaps

Poland is facing a significant shortage of educators, with an estimated 100,000 vacancies across the education system. According to Lesław Ordon of NSZZ Solidarność, a major portion of these vacancies affects preschool teachers. Data from the 2026 Profession Barometer indicates candidate deficits in 179 counties, with ten experiencing large shortages due to unfavorable working conditions.

Beyond salary concerns, teachers highlight structural issues. While school teachers can increase income through overtime and class management bonuses, preschool teachers face more limited opportunities for additional earnings despite having a higher teaching load (pensum) than subject teachers in schools.

Parallel to the staffing crisis, there are concerns regarding the quality of preparation for the workforce. A report by InterviewMe suggests that nearly 60% of Poles feel that the school system does not adequately prepare students for the labor market, citing a gap between academic learning and the practical skills required for professional life and job interviews.
