Polish agriculture faces crisis from drought and rising costs

Polish farmers are facing significant economic challenges due to severe drought, extreme weather, and rising production costs. The National Council of Agricultural Chambers (KRIR) has appealed to the Ministry of Agriculture for urgent action, including the appointment of local damage assessment commissions, financial compensation, and easier credit repayment terms.

Minister Stefan Krajewski has responded by proposing a new government application to report various types of agricultural losses, expanding beyond just drought-related damage. However, agricultural representatives have expressed concerns that current digital monitoring systems do not accurately reflect local realities and have called for legislative changes to include extreme heat in insurance catalogs and to restore decision-making power to local commissions.

Recent harvest data from regions like Wielkopolska shows lower yields for wheat and rapeseed compared to previous years. Additionally, a report on the financial condition of Polish farmers indicates that approximately 30.5% of farms rate their situation negatively, with many operating without financial buffers due to high input costs and unpredictable weather patterns.
