Poland: Fatal car accident involving elk kills passenger

A fatal car accident occurred on the S61 expressway near Czerwonka, north of Suwałki, when a vehicle collided with an elk on Friday evening around 9:30 PM. A 40-year-old female passenger sustained injuries so severe that she died in the hospital later that night. The 45-year-old driver was also injured, though his condition is not considered life-threatening.

The accident caused the road to be closed for several hours to allow for investigations by police and prosecutors. While collisions with elk are becoming more frequent in Poland due to a growing population of over 30,000 animals, experts note that such accidents rarely result in fatalities.
