Poland reports fatal and serious traffic accidents involving elk
A fatal traffic accident involving an elk occurred on the S61 expressway near Czerwonka, north of Suwalki, close to the Lithuanian border. A 40-year-old female passenger died in the hospital following the collision, while the 45-year-old driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Police and prosecutors are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
In a separate incident in Bogusławski Duże, a 21-year-old driver was hospitalized after his vehicle overturned following a collision with an elk on road 726. The animal died at the scene.
Experts note that the elk population in Poland has recovered significantly since the early 2000s, with over 30,000 wild animals now residing in the country, primarily in the northeast. The increase in wildlife-related accidents is attributed to modern road networks fragmenting natural habitats. While fatal collisions with elk are considered unusual in Poland, authorities are urging increased driver vigilance during evening and night hours in forested areas.
