Poland formally requests permanent U.S. military base

Polish defence minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak‑Kamysz said Warsaw has formally submitted a proposal to U.S. defence secretary Pete Hegseth to establish a new permanent American military base on Polish soil. The request follows President Donald Trump’s recent announcement that the United States will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, reinforcing the existing rotational presence of roughly 10,000 American personnel already stationed in the country.

Poland hopes the permanent base will deepen security ties with the United States and bolster NATO’s eastern flank amid concerns over Russian aggression. The move comes after a planned 4,000‑troop rotation was cancelled and after the United States announced a drawdown of up to 5,000 troops from Germany. Earlier proposals in 2018 even suggested naming the installation “Fort Trump.”
