Poland fuel prices rise amid Middle East tensions
Fuel prices in Poland are facing significant upward pressure due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and supply disruptions. Analysts from e-petrol.pl predict that diesel prices could reach between 8.99 and 9.29 PLN per liter in the coming week, potentially crossing the psychological 9 PLN threshold. While retailers are attempting to keep diesel prices below this mark, they are doing so by exhausting their retail margins.
Wholesale prices have also seen sharp increases. Orlen recently raised wholesale prices for Pb98 by 184 PLN and Pb95 by 123 PLN per cubic meter compared to the previous week. Gasoline (Pb95) is expected to remain high, with forecasted prices between 7.97 and 8.09 PLN per liter.
Fundacja Instrat reports that the fuel crisis, linked to the conflict in Iran, has cost Polish drivers and businesses approximately 20 billion PLN, with a total economic impact of 23 billion PLN through August 2026. This includes roughly 3 billion PLN in lost state budget revenue from VAT and excise taxes. A political dispute continues in Poland regarding how to mitigate these costs, with the government proposing a windfall tax and President Karol Nawrocki suggesting alternative measures such as temporary exemptions from retail sales tax and limits on refinery margins.
