Poland fuel prices surge following end of CPN relief program

Fuel prices in Poland have surged following the expiration of the 'Ceny Paliwa Niżej' (CPN) government relief program on August 31, 2026. The end of the program resulted in the VAT rate returning from 8 percent to the standard 23 percent and the removal of retail price caps.

According to data from e-petrol.pl, diesel prices have reached a historic high, averaging 8.75 PLN per liter. The average price for 95-octane gasoline has risen to 7.89 PLN per liter, while LPG is averaging 2.95 PLN per liter. These increases are driven by rising crude oil costs and geopolitical instability in the Middle East, specifically tensions involving Iran and the United States.

Minister of Energy Miłosz Motyka stated that while prices are high, current market analyses do not predict them exceeding the 10 PLN per liter threshold in the near future. However, the government is discussing potential new relief measures, which may depend on the implementation of a windfall tax on energy companies to fund such programs.
