Poland faces rising fuel and energy costs

Poland is experiencing a significant rise in energy and fuel costs driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the conclusion of government subsidy programs. Fuel prices, particularly diesel, have reached historic highs, with diesel approaching the 9 PLN per liter mark. This surge follows the end of the ‘Ceny Paliwa Niżej’ (Lower Fuel Prices) program, which previously provided VAT relief and price caps.

In the heating sector, gas and electricity prices are also climbing. Wholesale gas prices on the Polish Energy Exchange have risen by over 40% in recent months, leading to concerns that household heating bills could increase substantially as winter approaches. Additionally, the cost of heating pellets has seen a sharp increase, with prices per ton exceeding 2,000 PLN due to raw material shortages.

To address long-term energy management, Poland is investing 1 billion PLN into the installation of nearly 5 million smart meters. This initiative aims to facilitate the use of dynamic tariffs, allowing consumers to benefit from lower prices during periods of low demand, though current adoption remains extremely low.
