Poland funds biomass boiler and pumped‑storage plant to expand renewables

Orlen Termika signed a loan agreement with the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (NFOŚiGW) to finance a new biomass boiler at the Pruszków combined‑heat and power plant. The 205 million‑zł investment will receive 144 million zł (about 85%) in preferential financing, with the plant slated for commissioning in the fourth quarter of 2027. The new unit will replace two coal‑fired boilers, cutting CO₂ emissions by roughly 74,552 Mg per year and improving local air quality.

Tauron Polska Energia is developing the Rożnów II pumped‑storage hydro plant near Rożnów Lake. Planned capacity is 700–767 MW with more than 3 GWh of stored energy, making it Poland’s largest pumped‑storage facility. The project, estimated at 6 billion zł, is expected to start construction in 2028 and become operational by 2033. Besides supplying flexible, zero‑emission power to balance renewable generation, the plant will enhance regional flood protection by managing up to 10 % of the Dunajec River’s flood wave.
