Poland's Vistula River Nears Record Low Amid Widespread Water Shortages
The Vistula River in Warsaw is flowing at about 110‑111 cm, only a few centimetres above the historic low of 4 cm recorded in 2025. Hydrologists have lowered the river’s zero point by 100 cm, making the gap to the record appear smaller. Forecasts from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) warn that water levels are expected to fall further in the coming weeks.
The low flow is attributed to a prolonged drought, high summer temperatures, sand‑mining activities and degraded river regulation structures, which together reduce water volume and increase temperature and pollution. Ecologists note deteriorating river ecosystem health, lower oxygen for fish and challenges for navigation; only one of four river‑traffic vessels can operate in Sandomierz. Hydroelectric plants, such as the Połaniec power station, have curtailed output to match the reduced water flow.
Municipalities are also feeling the strain. In Mszana Dolna, night‑time water supplies have been cut and the town has earmarked 15 million zloty for water‑infrastructure upgrades, though benefits will take time to materialise. Beskid communities in the Silesian region have introduced water‑saving measures and temporary supply interruptions. Meanwhile, the Zalew Sulejowski reservoir recorded a level of 165.54 m on 20 July – its lowest in seven years – leaving boats stuck in mud and severely curtailing tourism at the Barkowice marina.
