Poland healthcare system faces transparency and ethics concerns

Issues regarding transparency and ethics within the Polish healthcare system have come to light through reports on information accessibility and systemic irregularities.

Medical professionals have noted a lack of accurate information regarding specialized clinics. For instance, surgical clinics that also provide proctological services are often not listed as such on official portals. When inquiries were made to the Mazovian Voivodeship Branch of the National Health Fund (NFZ), the agency provided lists of clinics performing certain procedures but failed to specify which ones actually accept referrals for specific specialties. The NFZ advised patients to consult their prescribing doctors regarding referral doubts, a response criticized as shifting responsibility away from the fund's duty to inform.

Additionally, journalist Grzegorz Jankowski has raised concerns regarding the ethics of private medical visits and systemic pathologies. These include high costs for initial consultations that lead to expensive referrals and allegations of doctors falsifying 72-hour shifts within a single day. Jankowski also questioned the high compensation for members of the supervisory board at the Southern Hospital in Warsaw, highlighting broader concerns regarding accountability and the management of healthcare institutions.
