Poland historical anniversaries: August 20 milestones
August 20 marks several significant historical milestones in Poland and Central Europe. In 1920, during the Battle of Warsaw, Polish forces successfully retook Przasnysz from Bolshevik troops, preventing the enemy from reorganizing in northern Mazovia.
During the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, soldiers from the ‘Kiliński’ battalion captured the strategic PAST-a building on Zielna Street, a major military success for the insurgents. That same year, Jan Rodowicz ‘Anoda’, a prominent scout leader and resistance figure, died from wounds sustained during the fighting at Monte Cassino.
In 1968, the Warsaw Pact intervention in Czechoslovakia began, with troops from the Soviet Union, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, and East Germany entering the country to suppress the Prague Spring reforms. Additionally, the date recalls the ongoing strikes in 1980 that eventually led to the formation of the Solidarity movement.
