Poland holds patriotic commemorations for WWII and resistance heroes

Various patriotic commemorations were held across Poland during the first weekend of September to honor those who fought for national independence and defended the country during World War II.

In the Sądecczyzna region, the 28th annual ceremony took place at Hala Łabowska. The event honored Father Władysław Gurgacz and the soldiers of the Polish Underground Independence Army’s ‘Żandarmeria’ unit. The proceedings included a memorial service, a mass, and the laying of flowers at monuments. Attendees included local officials, members of parliament, and various community organizations.

In Bełchatów, ceremonies were held to commemorate the defenders of September 1939, specifically the soldiers of General Ludwik Czyżewski’s group. Events included a mass at the Church of All Saints and ceremonies at the Grocholicach cemetery and Góra Borowa. During the commemorations, the ‘Rogatywka ppor. Apolloniusza Zawilskiego’ statuette was awarded to Bogumił Pieczka for his work in preserving Polish military traditions.
