Poland honors choreographer Conrad Drzewiecki on 100th birth anniversary

The Polish Sejm has passed a resolution to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Conrad Drzewiecki, a prominent dancer, choreographer, and reformer of Polish ballet. Drzewiecki, who was born on October 14, 1926, in Poznań, is credited with revolutionizing dance through the integration of classical technique with modern forms, improvisation, and dramatic theater.

In 1973, Drzewiecki founded the Polish Dance Theatre (Polski Teatr Tańca) in Poznań, which has become a major international center for contemporary dance. His pedagogical work at the State Ballet School in Poznań also shaped generations of artists, including influential figures such as Emil Wesołowski and Krzysztof Pastor.

To mark the centenary, the Teatr Wielki in Poznań, the General Ballet School, and the Polish Dance Theatre have organized a joint program of celebrations. The Sejm resolution, which passed with 283 votes in favor and 155 abstentions, serves as a formal tribute to his contributions to art education and the development of dance in Poland.
