Poland hosts briefing on advancements in spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) care

On September 3, 2026, a briefing titled ‘Poland’s contribution to the development of knowledge about spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)’ was held at the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. Initiated by Deputy Marshal Monika Wielichowska, the meeting served as a summary of SMA Awareness Month and addressed the evolving landscape of SMA care.

Advances in diagnostics and treatment have transformed SMA into a manageable chronic condition, allowing children treated early to develop near-normally. The discussion focused on Poland’s role in advancing SMA knowledge, including clinical trials, the collection of real-world data (RWD), and the assessment of long-term treatment safety and efficacy.

The event brought together medical experts, patient advocates, and government officials. Key participants included representatives from the Polish Society of Child Neurologists, the Medical University of Lublin, and the Gdańsk Medical University, alongside members of parliament and the Ministry of Health.
