Poland hosts disability sport olympiads in Żerków and Zgórsko

The first Olimpiada Sportowa Osób z Niepełnosprawnościami took place on 19 February at the stadium in Żerków. Organized by the Środowiskowy Dom Samopomocy im. Św. Szarbela in Dobieszczyzna, the event welcomed participants from 11 disability‑care centres. The opening featured a athletes’ march, an Olympic flame lighting and a taekwondo demonstration, while competitions spanned individual and relay formats aimed at fostering integration and active lifestyles.

A week later, on 25 June, the Wojewódzka Olimpiada Lekkoatletyczna Osób Niepełnosprawnych was held at the Dom Pomocy Społecznej in Zgórsko, near Kielce. Competitors from occupational‑therapy workshops and social‑care homes contested events such as medicine‑ball throw, long jump, football slalom and a 40‑metre run. Participants like Krzysław Linek highlighted the joy of movement, and director Adrianna Picheta stressed the olympiad’s focus on inclusion rather than winning. All athletes received medals and small gifts.
