Poland implements automated 24/7 waste collection systems

Poland is implementing innovative, automated waste management solutions to improve recycling efficiency and accessibility. In Śrem, the first unmanned, 24/7 electronic selective waste collection point (e-PSZOK) in Europe has been launched. Residents use a local resident card to access the facility, where they can select waste types via a touchscreen. The system automatically weighs and categorizes waste into specific containers for fractions such as bio-waste, construction debris, plastics, and paper. This automation allows for precise data collection on waste volumes and aims to reduce waste disposal fees.

In Bydgoszcz, a separate initiative is expanding the collection of electronic waste through the introduction of 'elektropaki'. This project involves installing 60 specialized, 24-hour collection points across residential areas to handle small electronic items like batteries, chargers, old phones, and CDs. Supported by EU funding, this expansion is designed to prevent small hazardous items from being disposed of incorrectly and to reduce the burden on traditional, stationary waste collection centers.
