Poland introduces new school nutrition guidelines
New nutritional regulations for schools and kindergartens in Poland, effective from September 1, 2026, aim to implement principles of a ‘planetary diet’ to promote both human health and environmental sustainability. The guidelines mandate an increased intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, while limiting meat consumption to a maximum of twice per week. Additionally, facilities must provide vegetable-based soups at least twice a week and offer at least one plant-based meal weekly.
The changes have sparked significant public debate. Nutritionists, such as Dr. Arkadiusz Matras, emphasize that the goal is not to eliminate meat but to address issues like childhood obesity and fiber deficiency by increasing plant-based variety. However, some parents and public figures have expressed concerns regarding potential nutritional imbalances and perceived ideological interference in children's diets. Commentators like Agnieszka Gozdyra have criticized the move as a political maneuver, while others, including chef Przemysław Klima, advocate for a balanced approach that avoids dietary extremes.
