Poland implements red high-friction asphalt for road safety

Road authorities in Poland are implementing a new red asphalt technology on specific sections of motor vehicle roads to enhance safety. A recent application of this method occurred on a 1.15-kilometer stretch of a county road leading to Podlesie in the Głuchołazy municipality, where a 100-meter curve through a forested area was treated with the red surface.

The red color serves two primary purposes: visibility and increased traction. The bright hue acts as a visual warning to drivers, making sharp curves more noticeable from a distance and during nighttime driving. More importantly, the red surface is a high-friction material designed to increase grip between tires and the road, which is critical for braking and navigating turns during wet or snowy conditions.

While the color may be mistaken for a bicycle path, it is intended for motor vehicles. The red surface itself does not constitute a traffic sign or impose new legal restrictions, such as speed limits or right-of-way changes; drivers must continue to follow standard vertical and horizontal road markings.
