Poland initiates energy transition for heating and coal sector
The Polish government is preparing a major modernization program for small local heating plants, aimed at affecting approximately 15 million citizens. Scheduled to launch next year, the strategy focuses on transitioning away from coal toward gas and integrating renewable energy sources to improve the financial stability of local utilities and secure heat supplies.
The total transformation strategy for the sector through 2040 is estimated to cost between 197 billion PLN and 231 billion PLN, funded by the national budget, EU funds, and financial instruments. Minister of Climate and Environment Paulina Hennig-Kloska announced the allocation of 4 billion PLN for this purpose, alongside the creation of a special banking fund.
Simultaneously, Polska Grupa Górnicza (PGG) is undergoing restructuring. PGG CEO Łukasz Deja noted that the company remains a primary supplier of energy coal, providing electricity for 5.9 million people and heating for nearly 5 million. As part of the restructuring, the company has begun closing two mining sites, with over 3,500 employees set to receive protection packages to assist their transition out of the industry.
