Poland intercepts Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over Baltic Sea

Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. The aircraft was operating approximately 40 kilometers from the Polish coast, near Ustka.

According to Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, the Russian plane was flying without an active transponder or a flight plan. While the aircraft did not violate Polish national airspace, the interception was conducted as a standard procedure to identify and monitor the object.

Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that such incidents are not isolated but represent “an element of constant pressure” as Russia regularly tests NATO's eastern flank. He emphasized that the Polish military remains on high alert and continues to monitor Polish airspace closely.
