Poland's ZUS launches new pensioner‑renter cards with enhanced security

On 13 July, Poland’s Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) began issuing redesigned pensioner‑renter cards. The traditional plastic card now features anti‑forgery measures such as guilloche patterns, micro‑printing and a permanent unique number, while the electronic mLegitycacja in the mObywatel app has been simplified by removing the issuing branch data.

According to ZUS regional press officer Beata Kopczyńska, the changes stem from new legal regulations and aim to increase data protection. Existing cards remain fully valid for the period indicated, and beneficiaries do not need to apply or visit ZUS offices; the electronic version is issued automatically to all entitled retirees and pensioners. Holders continue to use the card to obtain free or discounted public‑transport travel for seniors—free rides from age 70 with a personal ID and up to 50 % discounts or special senior tickets in many Polish cities.

The new design applies nationwide and does not affect the entitlement to transport benefits, only the document’s appearance and security features.
