Poland mushroom season brings abundant harvests and safety warnings

The autumn mushroom picking season is underway in Poland, with reports of abundant harvests in regions such as Łowicz and various areas across the country. While many enthusiasts are finding full baskets of porcini, bay boletes, and chanterelles, experts and authorities are issuing several warnings.

Safety is a primary concern. Police advise foragers to prepare for potential disorientation by carrying charged phones, GPS, and bright clothing. There is a significant risk of misidentifying edible species like parasol mushrooms with poisonous ones, such as the death cap. The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate recommends using professional identification services if in doubt.

Regarding regulations, Polish law allows free foraging for personal use in State Forest lands, but strict prohibitions apply in national parks and nature reserves. Commercial-scale harvesting requires specific agreements with forest administrations. Additionally, foragers are warned to avoid touching unidentified objects that may be wartime unexploded ordnance.

Market prices for mushrooms are currently higher than in previous years, with porcini and bay boletes fetching significant prices at local markets. While the season is dynamic, weather conditions are increasingly favorable for a widespread autumn mushroom surge.
