Poland issues widespread heat and thunderstorm warnings for July 26‑27

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) issued first‑degree heat warnings for twelve Polish voivodeships on 26 July, covering central, western and southern regions. Forecast temperatures are expected to reach 30‑32 °C, with a 90 % probability of exceeding 30 °C in Wielkopolska and an 85 % chance in Podkarpacie. The agency also released first‑degree thunderstorm warnings for eight north‑west voivodeships and for the Łódź region, predicting rain totals of 20‑35 mm, wind gusts up to 90 km/h and isolated hail.

In Podkarpacie a second‑degree storm alert was announced for eleven counties, with expected rainfall of 30‑40 mm and wind gusts up to 90 km/h. Kraków authorities temporarily closed the Main Market Square to horse‑drawn carriages from 11:00 to 18:00 on 26 July to protect people and animals from the heat.

The alerts are in force from midday until the evening, and IMGW advises residents to secure loose objects, avoid parking under trees, limit exposure to the sun, stay hydrated and follow safety guidelines during storms.
