Poland lags behind Western Europe in life expectancy

Poland continues to trail Western Europe in both average life expectancy and healthy years lived. According to health expert Dr. Robert Mordaka, speaking at the Karpacz Economic Forum, approximately 60 percent of deaths in the country are attributed to two primary disease groups: cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

Dr. Mordaka identified systemic issues within the healthcare system, noting that Poland invests less than 2 percent of its health budget into prevention, compared to an EU average of approximately 6 percent. He emphasized that without increased funding for preventative measures, current trends are unlikely to reverse.

On an individual level, the expert highlighted the importance of lifestyle factors, referencing the ‘Life’s Essential 8’ framework. Key areas for improving cardiovascular health include managing blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol, maintaining a healthy weight, ensuring adequate sleep, eating a healthy diet, and avoiding smoking.
