Poland launches nationwide sewage and septic tank inspections
Municipalities across Poland have launched inspections to ensure compliance with wastewater management laws. Local governments and municipal police are checking whether property owners have connected to the sewage network where technically and economically feasible, or if they are properly maintaining alternative systems.
Under the Act on Maintaining Cleanliness and Order in Municipalities, owners must connect to the existing sewage network if possible. Failure to do so can result in fines ranging from 500 to 1,000 PLN, court fines up to 5,000 PLN, or administrative penalties reaching 50,000 PLN. In extreme cases, local authorities may order the connection to be made at the owner's expense.
For the approximately 2.5 million properties using septic tanks or private treatment plants, inspections are mandatory at least once every two years. Authorities verify that liquid waste is being removed regularly by checking contracts, invoices, and proof of payment. Specific requirements for emptying frequency vary by municipality.
