Poland launches pig farming subsidies and ASF prevention funding

Polish pig producers are navigating new government support programs aimed at stabilizing the industry and combating African Swine Fever (ASF). The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has announced a subsidy program for swine producers, including 500 PLN for purchasing a breeding gilt, a 1,500 PLN premium after its first farrowing, and 1,000 PLN for each sow in herds following national production cycles. However, the National Council of Agricultural Chambers (KRIR) is advocating for these subsidies to also cover gilts raised within a farmer's own farm, rather than only those purchased from external suppliers. Breeders argue that self-rebuilding herds using licensed genetics is more cost-effective and reduces the risk of introducing ASF.

In a separate initiative, the Agency for Restructuring and Modernisation of Agriculture (ARiMR) has opened applications for investments designed to prevent the spread of ASF. Farmers can apply for up to 100,000 PLN to fund biosecurity measures such as fencing, disinfection equipment, disinfection basins, and the construction of silos or straw storage. The funding can cover up to 80% of eligible costs. Applications are being accepted until October 1, 2026, for farmers maintaining at least 50 pigs, or 27 pigs for organic farms, though these thresholds do not apply to breeders of native or purebred pig species.
