Poland launches systemic aid for pig farms as EU‑Poland agricultural tensions rise

Poland’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development announced a comprehensive support package for pig producers. Minister Stefan Krajewski said the plan will include full reimbursement of bio‑security costs, discussions with the European Commission on early advance payments to improve farm liquidity, and measures to open new export markets, especially in Asia. The ministry also outlined future actions such as evaluating funded programmes, strengthening farmers’ positions in supply chains, and rebuilding national breeding stocks.

At the same time, the European Commission signalled it could start infringement proceedings against Poland over its continued embargo on certain Ukrainian agricultural imports. MEP Ewa Zajączkowska‑Hernik criticised the move, stating, “Komisja Europejska grozi Polsce wszczęciem procedury i karami jeśli nie otworzymy granicy na wszystkie produkty rolne z Ukrainy!” The dispute highlights broader tensions between Poland’s agricultural policy and EU trade rules.

The combined announcements reflect Poland’s effort to stabilise its pork sector while navigating EU‑wide trade and regulatory challenges.
