Poland leads EU in railway crossing fatalities

Poland recorded the highest number of fatalities at railway crossings in the European Union in 2024. According to Eurostat data, 45 people died in such incidents in Poland, accounting for nearly one-quarter of the 199 total fatalities reported across the EU.

In comparison, Germany reported 26 deaths despite having a rail network nearly twice the size of Poland's, while the Czech Republic reported 12 deaths. Transport market expert Adrian Furgalski noted that the issue is not the trains themselves, but rather the inability of users to navigate crossings safely.

Following a series of tragic accidents, police in Kutno have issued warnings to drivers. Authorities highlighted common dangerous behaviors, including failing to stop at 'STOP' signs, entering crossings during red light signals, attempting to beat oncoming trains, ignoring barriers, and using mobile phones while driving. Police urge motorists to slow down and ensure a crossing is safe to exit before proceeding.
