Poland Looks to Hybrid Renewable Projects to Ease Grid Constraints

A new Ember report highlights that hybridizing renewable energy sources—combining wind or solar generation with existing hydroelectric plants—could relieve Poland’s grid bottlenecks. With more than 700 hydro facilities, Poland can add wind or solar capacity at the same connection point, potentially doubling network utilisation without expanding transmission capacity. The analysis estimates that such hybrid projects could integrate up to 18 % of new renewable output expected by 2030, helping avoid curtailment of intermittent generation. Ember’s experts stress that regulatory reforms and streamlined approval processes are essential to unlock these hybrid solutions, noting that only Portugal and Spain currently have detailed frameworks for such projects across the seven EU markets examined.

The report also points to broader EU potential, where similar hybridisation could add 25 GW of wind and solar capacity to existing hydro sites without new grid upgrades, offering a rapid, cost‑effective path toward higher renewable penetration.
