Poland loses 490 billion zloty due to war in Ukraine

Poland has lost more than 490 billion zloty (approximately 2.7 trillion CZK) due to the impacts of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This figure represents roughly 3.5 percent of the country's cumulative GDP for the period between 2022 and 2025, according to data from Statistics Poland.

Polish households have sustained the largest losses, totaling 292.1 billion zloty. The business sector lost 126 billion zloty, while the public administration sector, including local governments, incurred costs of 72 billion zloty.

The construction sector was particularly hard hit, seeing a decline in gross value added estimated at 120.9 billion zloty. This was driven by labor shortages, as the number of Ukrainian men registered for temporary residence in Poland fell by 12.7 percent in 2023, and rising costs for materials such as steel, cement, and non-ferrous metals.

Statistical analysts reached these conclusions by examining factors including aid provided to Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees, labor market shifts, demographic changes, and the decline in household purchasing power following the slowdown in wage growth after the February 2022 invasion.
