Poland manages heatwave impacts on energy grid and weather

Following record-breaking heatwaves in Poland, where temperatures reached 40.6°C in Kołuda Wielka, experts and authorities are assessing the impact on infrastructure and weather patterns.

PGE GiEK has confirmed that its power plants, including Bełchatów, Opole, Turow, and Rybnik, remain highly available despite the heat. These 29 units utilize closed cooling systems with cooling towers, allowing them to maintain stability in the national power grid. Technical services are currently on increased readiness to monitor cooling and ventilation systems.

Regarding weather trends, IMGW-PIB indicates that the probability of further heatwaves before the end of August is very low, with temperatures expected to remain below normal for the next two weeks. Looking ahead to September, the ECMWF predicts a warmer month than average, though without extreme anomalies, with potential brief heat spikes limited to southern regions like Silesia and Małopolska.

In terms of residential impact, experts from Ruukki Polska emphasize that effective thermal barriers, particularly well-insulated roofs, are essential to prevent heat accumulation in building partitions during extreme weather events.
