Poland marks 87th anniversary of 1939 bombings with new military unit announcement

Commemorations were held in Brzesko and Małaszewicze to mark the 87th anniversary of the German Luftwaffe bombings during the first days of World War II in September 1939.

In Brzesko, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced the establishment of the 87th Anti-Aircraft Regiment. The new unit will be equipped with short and very short-range missile and artillery systems through modernization programs such as NAREW, PILICA+, and SAN. Additionally, a company of approximately 100 soldiers from the 113th Battalion of the Territorial Defense Forces (WOT) is being transferred to Brzesko to support crisis management and local assistance.

In Małaszewicze, ceremonies took place at a monument near the Free Customs Area to honor the victims of the airfield bombings that occurred on September 1, 1939. The event included a memorial service, the lighting of memory candles, and a film presentation detailing the historical air raids that damaged aircraft and hangars at the local airfield.
