Poland marriage and divorce rates show significant shifts

Marriage rates in Poland have seen a consistent decline over the last 15 years. In 2025, there were approximately 133,000 new marriages, a significant drop from the 250,000 recorded in 2013 and over 300,000 in the early 1980s. By the end of 2025, the total number of marriages in the country stood at 8.5 million, which is nearly 80,000 fewer than the previous year.

In contrast, divorce rates remain high. In 2025, courts granted nearly 61,000 divorces, while formal separations were rare, with only about 600 cases. Data indicates that divorces are nearly three times more frequent in urban areas than in rural regions. The average marriage lasts about 15 years before ending in divorce, with incompatibility of character cited as the primary cause in nearly 60 percent of cases.

Demographic profiles show that women are more likely to initiate divorce proceedings, accounting for two-thirds of filings. Additionally, there is a notable trend of “silver divorces,” with a more than twofold increase in divorces among individuals over the age of 50 who have been married for at least 30 years.
