Poland marriage and divorce trends show shifting demographics

In Poland, character incompatibility is the leading cause of divorce, accounting for nearly 60 percent of marital dissolutions, followed by infidelity and alcoholism. Last year, the country recorded over 60,000 divorces and approximately 600 separations.

In the Świętokrzyskie region, the divorce rate was 9 per 10,000 residents, which is lower than the national average of 16 per 10,000. Statistics indicate that 60 percent of divorcees are urban residents and women initiate 70 percent of the proceedings. There has also been a notable decline in marriage rates, with a 42 percent decrease in weddings compared to 2015.

Regarding international unions, there were a record 2,556 Polish-Ukrainian marriages. Demographic analysis suggests that approximately 80 percent of these are civil marriages, while 20 percent are religious. The prevalence of civil ceremonies is attributed largely to religious differences between the predominantly Roman Catholic Polish population and the predominantly Orthodox or Greek Catholic Ukrainian population.
