Poland middle class income thresholds analyzed

Defining the middle class in Poland has become complex as traditional markers like home and car ownership no longer serve as reliable indicators of material status. Economist Marek Zuber notes that there is no single universal definition, though the OECD methodology suggests the middle class consists of individuals earning between 75% and 200% of the median income.

Based on March 2026 data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS), the median salary was 7,530.45 PLN gross. This places the OECD-defined middle-class income range between approximately 5,648 PLN and 15,061 PLN gross. However, public perception differs; many Polish citizens surveyed suggested that a monthly income of 7,000 to 10,000 PLN is necessary to achieve a middle-class standard of living and avoid constant financial anxiety.

Zuber further suggests that income thresholds should vary depending on household composition, noting that a family with two children earning 15,000 to 20,000 PLN per month would likely qualify as middle class.
