Poland: Military Ministry funding for hospitals faces scrutiny

The Polish Ministry of National Defence (MON) has allocated significant funds to military-affiliated medical facilities, sparking questions regarding the distribution of resources. A military hospital in Krakow is set to receive 567.2 million PLN for construction and investment purchases between 2024 and 2026. This amount exceeds the combined funding of 11 other national military facilities, which received a total of 519.9 million PLN. For comparison, the Military Medical Institute in Warsaw received 187.3 million PLN.

Reports have highlighted potential political connections regarding the Krakow facility, noting it is located in the home region of Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Additionally, scrutiny has been directed at the appointment of a civilian director, Professor Bartłomiej Guzik, following a change in the unit's statutes. Concerns have been raised regarding professional and personal links between the director and the Minister, though the Ministry has not responded to inquiries regarding these connections.

In a separate matter, the Hospital of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Wołomin has been granted over 1.05 million PLN through the Population Protection and Civil Defense Program. These funds, provided via the Mazovian Voivodeship Office, will be used to purchase a 4x4 ambulance, three portable ultrasound machines, and an automatic resuscitation device to enhance emergency response capabilities.
