Maciej Berek leaves ministerial post in Poland

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced that Maciej Berek is stepping down from his role as Minister for Supervision of Government Policy Implementation. Tusk described Berek as his ‘right hand’ and noted that the minister had personally requested to be relieved of his duties to pursue other tasks.

Joanna Knapińska, the current head of the Government Legislation Centre, will take over Berek’s responsibilities, including his role as chair of the Standing Committee of the Council of Ministers.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Berek is being considered as a candidate for a judgeship at the Constitutional Tribunal, potentially replacing Justyn Piskorski, whose term ends on September 18. If nominated, Berek’s candidacy would require approval by the Sejm. The potential move has drawn criticism from opposition figures, such as MEP Maciej Wąsik, who questioned the political neutrality of appointing an active politician to the Tribunal.
