Poland Ministry considers extending deposit voucher validity to 90 days

The Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment is considering legislative changes to the national deposit system to extend the validity of vouchers issued by bottle return machines. Currently, while regulations suggest a 30-day minimum, individual retail chains often set much shorter expiration periods, which can lead to consumers losing their deposit funds.

The proposed change would mandate that stores honor these vouchers for at least 90 days. This measure aims to benefit consumers, particularly those who shop sporadically or collect multiple vouchers to redeem at once.

The regulatory impact assessment is currently undergoing internal consultations. Once finalized, the project is expected to be submitted to the Government Program Team for inclusion in the Council of Ministers' legislative schedule. The official deposit system is slated to begin operations on October 1, 2025.
