A1 motorway accident kills four workers near Mykanów
A fatal accident occurred on the A1 motorway near the Mykanów junction on Tuesday, September 1, around 9:00 AM. A 32-year-old Scania truck driver collided with a group of road maintenance workers performing scheduled repairs.
Four men, aged between 20 and 62, were killed at the scene. Four other workers were transported to hospitals in Częstochowa and Sosnowiec in serious condition, with one patient reported to be in critical state. The victims were employees of a road maintenance company, potentially based in Małopolska.
The truck driver, a resident of the Łódź Voivodeship, was sober at the time of the collision and was detained by police for investigation. While GDDKiA officials stated that the traffic organization and safety plans were prepared correctly on paper, video footage obtained by local media suggests that the physical placement of safety barriers and vehicles was insufficient and did not meet required safety distances.
Emergency services, including 13 fire departments and two medical helicopters, responded to the scene. The A1 motorway was completely blocked in the direction of Gliwice for several hours before traffic was eventually restored.
