Poland opposes proposed EU budget cuts for 2028-2034

Poland is preparing to contest proposed cuts to the European Union budget for the 2028-2034 period. Following a proposal from the Irish Presidency to reduce the seven-year budget by 8 percent—lowering it to 1.62 trillion euros from the European Commission's suggested 1.76 trillion euros—Polish officials have signaled strong opposition.

Deputy Foreign Minister Ignacy Niemczycki stated that Poland intends to protect national envelopes, specifically targeting funds for agriculture, regional development, and military security. Niemczycki expressed concern over disproportionate cuts to democratic resilience, including funding to combat disinformation and election interference. Additionally, the Polish government noted that the Emissions Trading System (ETS) as a new EU revenue source is viewed as costly from a Polish perspective.

Polish representatives are coordinating with a group of 17 member states, referred to as the ‘friends of cohesion policy,’ to maintain a unified stance on protecting regional development and common agricultural funds.
